Merolla has a golden day

Staff Report

DARIEN — Christine Merolla, a seventh grader at Middlebrook School, won two first-place gold medals, skating her Individual Freestyle program and Interpretive program at the 2008 Darien Open Figure Skating Competition last month at the Darien Ice Rink.

This is a major USFSA (United States Figure Skating Association) competition, sponsored by the Skating Club of Southern Connecticut that offers competition events from Beginner through Senior, attracting hundreds of skaters from all over the Northeast and beyond for the past two decades.

Merolla has moved up two skating levels since last year, when she finished the season with 15 consecutive gold medals.

She is a member of the Springdale Figure Skating Club and trains daily at the Twin Rinks Figure Skating Training Center in Stamford and is coached by former Canadian figure skating champion, Frances Gold Lind, and Russian ice dancing champion, Ekaterina Gvozdkova.

On an added local note, the music for her individual programs is produced and mixed by Wilton resident and recording artist, Arthur Lipner.

Merolla has seven competitions planned between now and September, including the New England FSC Challenge in Marlborough, Mass.; the Lake Placid Summer Figure Skating Championship; the 2008 Nutmeg Games in Danbury; and the 2008 Middle Atlantic Figure Skating Championships at Chelsea Piers in New York City.
