WILTON With only senior regularly out on the field, between the baselines, Warriors baseball coach Tim Eagen knew the one Achille's heal is team would have this spring.
Experience.
Suddenly, however, the wunderkids of Wilton High are getting a little more experience than they bargained for.
Six times this season, including scrimmages, Wilton has gone to extra innings. Four of those games have occured over the last three weeks as the Warriors have played 10 extra innings nearly a game and half above what was schedule.
"One thing you can't teach is experience," said Eagen. "That have to gain it and, being so young, sometimes that's a hard lesson to learn. But we're getting them to play hard and learn how to make that experience pay for us down the road."
However, playing under pressure and in tight games like extra inning affairs is something that pays off big time teams. The Warriors are 3-3 in those extra inning affairs and also 3-3 in games decided by two runs or less.
Wilton started the month with a 12-7 nine-inning win over Trinity Catholic and followed that up with a 13-5 win over Bridgeport. Against Ridgefield, however, the Warriors lost a heart-breaking 3-2 game in nine innings.
As hard as losses like that are to take, though, Eagen knows the pay off awaits.
"Every time I've ahd great teams at Wilton, there was a stepping stone to get there," said Eagen, who has three sophomore starters on his squad. "That's what we're doing right now."
Softball
They had scored four runs in 43 innings while mired in a five-game losing streak.
Over the last two games, though, Bruce Cunningham's Warriors have exploded for 27 runs in a 17-1 win over Bridgeport Central and a 10-1 win over Brien McMahon on Wednesday.
Pacing the offense in the win over McMahon was Katie Wingertzahn, whose bases-loaded triple blew open the game. Christy Ketley had two triples and a single while Stacy Pokora doubled.
Pitcher Kat Poulos was, well, Kat Poulos with 15 strikeouts and two walks.
CORRECTION: Due to a reporter's error, it was incorrectly reported last week that the Warriors were looking for their first-ever state tournament appearance. Actually, Wilton is still seeking its first-ever FCIAC playoff appearance. Wilton has made four straight state tournament trips.
Boys Track
The Warriors boys track team split a meet against St. Joseph and Fairfield Warde on Tuesday, beating the Cadets, 123-5, but losing a tight 78-72 decision to Warde.
"It was a good meet and a bit of a heartbreaker with a loss of such a small margin to Fairfield," coach Mike Chapleau said. "The kids were great, really focused, definitely up to the task and definitely starting to come around as we move closer to the championship season."
The Warriors had a series of winners in the meet.
Danny Prospect (1,600 in 4:45) and Jeff Prescott (800 in 2:09) won individual events and joined forces with Chris Pierce and Ali Sadegi to win the 4x800 relay (8:57).
In the field events, Luke Wakeen won the javelin (133-feet) and the discus (118).
Second-place finishers went to the 4x100 team, Will Finnie in the 400 (55.23), Walker Jenkins in the 3,200 (10:21), Nick Nanez in the long (18-6) and triple jumps (34-7), Joe Smith in the shot put (39-11) and Ned Hemmerle in the pole vault (8-6).
Golf
The golf team made it a perfect 10 to start the season, beating St. Joseph and Trumbull in a three-way match.
Brian Murphy led the way with a 40, but it was Jack Mathews playing out of the No. 5 slot who pulled out a 41.
Marshall Stock (40), Will Herndon (46), (40 and Jim Kachadoorian (45) rounted out the scorers.
